Last Name London, First Name Theophilus

This Thursday Theophilus London Blog is taking over.   First stop? Bowery Ballroom for a sold out show. Second? Afterparty at Madame Wong.

It’s rare for underground talent— like this Trinidadian MC who experiments with afropop/electrojam & 90s rave to get the mainstream’s (MTV) attention BEFORE HIS DEBUT ALBUM (Timez are Weird These Days).   He rose up the old-fashioned way. One killer mixtape under his own label (This Charming Mixtape by The Lovers) seduced club kids over the pond and back home.

There’s a lot of things to be said about him.  According to The Seattle Times, “London does Auto-Tune pop smarter than Akon (“One Last Time”), damaged rap better than Kid Cudi (“Last Name London”) and the best re-imagining of the bass line from Biggie Smalls’ 1994 anthem “Juicy” in recent memory (“Strange Love,” with Sara from Tegan and Sara).”
